CBS Developing a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle Spinoff Series in Live-Action

Everyone thought that the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were back, but after Out of the Shadows, the franchise has found itself once again in hiatus. What's interesting though, is that CBS is looking to bring back the Turtles for a live-action show.

The Cinema Spot reports that CBS All Access is developing a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles show based on the upcoming comic, The Last Ronin. We don't have any official details on the show, but the comic does come with this synopsis:

In a future New York City far different from the one we know today, a lone surviving Turtle goes on a seemingly hopeless mission to obtain justice for his fallen family and friends.

It's worth noting that this version of the Turtles is not so kid-friendly as it comes from original creators Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird. If you know your TMNT history, you'll know that it actually started out as a gritty revenge comic, and not about the G-rated pizza fanatics that we know and love.

"About 10 years ago, I re-discovered a 20-page outline for a TMNT story that Peter and I wrote together back in 1987," Eastman told THR about The Last Ronin, "The story was set 30 years in the future, which, as written then, was set in 2017. Reading through it again, I drifted back to a very different time in TMNT history — back when it was all about the comics, mostly just Peter and I writing and drawing the issues, pre-everything the world would soon come to know about these characters that we'd created and called the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles."

We don't know exactly how the show plans to pull-off live-action Turtles, but I have a feeling it's going to be a practical suit like in the old films. Then again, I'd be up for a high-budget miniseries with CGI. Hopefully, we get an update soon.

No release date has been set for the series, but TMNT: The Last Ronin is set to come out later this year.
