Cate Blanchett Wanted to Play a Dwarf in Lord of the Rings

Cate Blanchett had played the role of Lady Galadriel in the Lord of the Rings films, and with Blanchett's penchant for playing ethereal women, she admits that she wanted to play one more role in the form of a dwarf extra.

Talking to Marc Maron's WTF Podcast (via Pinkvilla), Blanchett admits:

"I loved it so much and I did say to [director Peter Jackson] and [screenwriter Frances Walsh], they were doing a banquet scene with a whole lot of dwarves. I always wanted to play the bearded lady, so I asked them, ‘Could I be your hairy wife woman when you pan across the banquet table of dwarves?'"

Apparently there were some scheduling issues, and Blanchett ended up having to give up the part. If anything, it's fun to know that Blanchett loved working on the movie so much she was open to playing a dwarf in the background.

For now, it looks like her work on the franchise is done. After the Lord of the Rings movies, she went on to reprise Galadriel in The Hobbit trilogy as well. We don't know how connected the Amazon LOTR series will be to the films, but seeing as Galadriel is immortal, it's possible she could make an appearance there. After all, the series is supposed to end with the war that began in Fellowship of the Ring.

No release date has been set for Amazon's Lord of the Rings series, but it's expected to debut sometime in 2021.
