Cate Blanchett Argues That Thor: Ragnarok’s Hela Might Not Be Evil

Cate Blanchett's Hela might certainly seem like the villain of Taika Waititi's space buddy superhero film, Thor: Ragnarok, however, the Australian actress thinks that fans shouldn't be quick to call the Asgardian Goddess of Death as an "evil" entity just yet.

Speaking with Screen Rant during their Thor: Ragnarok set visit, Blanchett tries to convince fans that Hela's more than just a symbol of evil in the upcoming Marvel movie. Hela is the Goddess of Death, and being locked away for nearly a millennia has been causing problems for the realm.

"She's been banished for a very long time– I don't know how much I'm allowed to say… I think if you were locked under the Asgardian stairs for 5,000 years you'd be a little bit cross. But I think it's very interesting to bring the concept of Death into a world that's ostensibly immortal. You know you look at the Western world and in most cultures, Death has been banished from the world in which most Western people live. And as a result, I think it's made life rather screwed up.

You know, there's a side of death which can be gentle and kind and there's a side of death which can be brutal and savage, depending on whose death it is. But I think that there's a lot of unresolved issues that she has with Asgard, that each step of the way, she doesn't meet people who are receptive to her. And I think she's quite bewildered as to why people are frightened of her. But the more havoc she wreaks, the stronger she becomes."

While some would argue that death has always been humanity's greatest enemy, death has always been the binary partner of life. Without death, life would not exist, so it's understandable why Hela finds herself a bit confused by Asgard's perception of her.

It seems like Waititi's dealing with pretty high concepts in Thor: Ragnarok, and we're excited to see everything play out when the movie premiers on November 3, 2017.
