Annette’s role in the Castlevania games is pretty much Richter’s love interest who’s often placed in the position of a damsel in distress. She gets kidnapped by Shaft, Dracula’s servant, and Richter sets out to save her.

There are many changes to Annette in the Netflix series – not only in her appearance but also in her story. In Castlevania: Nocturne, she is a powerful sorceress and a fearless fighter.

Using her power and wits, Annette managed to escape slavery in the Caribbean. She’s clearly not someone that Richter has to save.

Castlevania: Nocturne provides a backstory for Annette. In 1780 in Saint-Domingue, she witnessed the death of her mother at the hands of Vaublanc, a vampire and slave master.

Annette becomes a slave, but it was always in her mind that she could not be caged. She was always plotting her escape.

She eventually meets Edouard, an opera singer who introduces her to the Maroons, escaped slaves mobilizing a resistance.

Annette and Edouard attempt to take down Vaublanc, but he turns into a bat and escapes. Cecile then gets a vision about the Vampire Messiah, so Annette and Edouard decide to go to France.

And that is where she finds Richter Belmont and helps him take down the Vampire Messiah. She also manages to get her revenge on Vaublanc.

Annette inherited from her father’s bloodline the power of Ogun, the god of war and iron. She has powers over rock and metal. Annette can use her magic to levitate rocks and control metal. She is also a skilled swordswoman.

Annette was trained by the high priestess Cecile. Cecile taught her how to control her powers.

She taught her spells, how to open spiritual crossroads for ceremonies, and how to quieten her fear so that she could hear Ogun clearly.

Annette and Richter get married in the Castlevania games and continue the Belmont bloodline. But they do not get together in the first season of Castlevania: Nocturne.

In fact, most of the time, Annette is angry at Richter for running away.

While Tera and Maria explain that Olrox has haunted him since he was a boy, Annette responds that everyone has nightmares. She explains that if she lets her past terrify her, she will never be free of it.

Eventually, she patches things up with Richter, but a romance isn’t really teased.

The Netflix series may also change things regarding Richter and Annette’s love story, so we have yet to see what will happen in future seasons of Castlevania: Nocturne.
