Captain Marvel Movie Makes Major Change to Carol Danvers' Origin

If you're reading The Life of Captain Marvel, you'll know that she got her powers from the original bearer of that name Mar-Vell. However, the movie will be making a major change regarding her origin, though Mar-Vell and The Kree will still be a part of it. In fact, the latter is literally in her blood and we're not talking about a transplant or anything like that.

During an interview with Entertainment Weekly, actress Brie Larson revealed that Carol would be half-Kree. This is a fairly new development since this isn't how she got her powers in the comic books. Plus, her parents were only human before, so there's another major change.

"You have this Kree part of her that's unemotional, that is an amazing fighter and competitive. Then there's this human part of her that is flawed but is also the thing that she ends up leading by. It's the thing that gets her in trouble, but it's also the thing that makes her great. And those two sides warring against each other is what makes her her."

Seeing Carol struggle with this should make for an interesting character arc since she now has to think about how some of her skills were only developed due to her alien biology. That can definitely mess with a person who's been working hard for his or her entire life and Carol fits that bill perfectly.

The MCU has always had a habit of changing origins or backstories if it makes for a more compelling plot. Star-Lord's father was originally an alien named J'Son of Spartax, a member of the Spartax Empire but they changed that in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, making his father Ego the Living Planet.

Captain Marvel comes out on March 8, 2019.
