Captain Marvel Gets New Ongoing Series Starting January

With Captain Marvel coming to theaters next March, it only made sense for Marvel to announce a new series for the character. In January, Carol Danvers is going to get a shiny new #1 as part of a brand-new ongoing series. Carol has had a lot of start-and-stop runs over the past few years, so here's hoping that this is the title that sticks around.

First reported by the New York Times, the new series will have Uncanny X-Men writer Kelly Thompson and artist Carmen Canero as the creative team. The two are planning to bring Carol back to New York and deal with a number of things, including something "risky" and vague called "costume weirdness." We'll have to wait for the issue to come out before we can try and guess what exactly that is.

Bringing her back to New York was an important move on the part of the creative team since they feel that Carol has been in space for too long. This isn't untrue since she did lead a new version of Alpha Flight that handled cosmic threats. Now that she's back on Earth, Carol will try and reconnect with some old friends, including a few female guest stars like close friend Spider-Woman.

A slight redesign was also made to her costume, with pouches and a new boot design added. This was likely done to make it look more in line with the movie version. She has also ditched the mohawk, which might sadden some fans who thought that Carol rocked that look really well.

Captain Marvel #1 comes to comic stores in January.
