Captain Marvel: 90s Movies Like Terminator 2 and Independence Day Inspired the Film

Just like Wonder Woman, Captain Marvel is going to be a period piece of a movie, and it's set to take place sometime in the 90s. As it turns out, the movie also draws inspiration from movies from that era, and it should be interesting to think what the movie could look like when it comes out.

Director Jonathan Schwartz told Entertainment Weekly:

"'90s action movie is not the worst reference in the world, especially when you start looking at Robocop, Total Recall, even Starship Troopers a little bit… Terminator 2, Independence Day. There's a high-concept action-movie feel there that ends up being very character-based but also super badass, which is kind of the bullseye we wanted to hit."

So far, Marvel has usually been placing the timelines of the movie around the same time that it was released, but once in a while you get movies that are out of the order of the established time. Captain America: The First Avenger was a period piece, and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2's story takes place a mere months after the first film; in reality we had to wait a good three years before we could get the sequel.

As for embracing the 90s era, co-director Ana Boden explained:

"The ‘90s doesn't feel that long ago to us because we're really old… But doing this movie has really made us realize how out of date so much stuff from the ‘90s actually is, and we've been having a lot of fun with that."

Hopefully Captain Marvel ends up being the hit that the MCU is waiting for. They may be ahead in the numbers, but they have yet to find a female superheroine who could rival the popularity of Wonder Woman.

Captain Marvel hits theaters March 8, 2019.
