One of the comic book news that dominated this year is the cancellation of the Batgirl film that was slated for HBO Max. Warner Bros. Discovery made the call of scrapping it all together after assessing that it was "not good enough" for theatrical release and they decided to turn it into a tax write-off instead.
Now that several weeks have passed since the news broke, Brendan Fraser, who was starring in the film as Firefly, chimed in again on the unfortunate cancellation of the project in a recent interview with Variety where he described it as "tragic" and praised the production values of the film as they didn't rely a lot on green scenes.
"It’s tragic. It doesn’t engender trust among filmmakers and the studio. Leslie Grace was fantastic. She’s a dynamo — just a spot-on performer. Everything we shot was real and exciting and just the antithesis of doing a straightforward digital, all-green-screen thing," the actor said.
"They ran firetrucks around downtown Glasgow at 3 in the morning, and they had flamethrowers. It was a big-budget movie, but one that was just stripped down to the essentials."
Based on his comments, it looks like Fraser really felt disappointed about the news just like most fans and the people involved in the making of the film. Unfortunately, there is no sign that Warner Bros is going to reverse the decision anytime soon.
Now, Fraser is currently getting a major Oscar buzz for his leading role in the new Darren Aronofsky film The Whale where he is being considered the frontrunner to win Best Actor. Even with the now-absence of Batgirl, Fraser's renaissance in show business is still going strong as ever.

Fraser currently stars as Cliff Steele in the DC series Doom Patrol. Its fourth season is set to release on December 8 on HBO Max.
