Breaking Bad Director to Helm Pilot for HBO’s The Last of Us Series

Everyone is excited about the release of The Last of Us Part II next week, and HBO is taking the opportunity to slowly hype up their series based on the game. What's interesting is, the show has finally found someone to helm the pilot.

Talking to Discussing Film, director Johan Renck (Breaking Bad, Chernobyl) has confirmed that he would be directing the pilot of The Last of Us. He says:

"I'm an executive producer on it and attached to it. It's an ongoing TV series. So that's not something that I will be able to take on to that extent, but I'm part of that series, and I will be directing at least the pilot. Then we'll see how it goes on further. I mean, both [showrunner Craig Mazin] and I, we are working with each other again, and we will work with each other on other things because we like each other."

While most video game adaptations usually end up lackluster, HBO is doing something different with The Last of Us in the sense that they will be working closely with game director Neil Druckmann. With TLOU Part II already underway, I suspect that Druckmann has a lot of free time to actually help with the series.

While it's hard to adapt video games into movies, I think turning The Last of Us into a series is a smart move. It's also great that they managed to get the guys behind Chernobyl on the show because that series' bleak tone is kind of perfect for a property like The Last of Us.

We don't have a release for HBO's The Last of Us yet, but Part II of the game is set to come out on June 19.
