#BoycottMulan Movement Planning To Force Response Out Of Disney With Disneyland Protest

It looks like the movement to boycott Disney's live-action Mulan is getting even more serious with protestors planning to stage a protest at Hong Kong Disneyland.

As readers might have already known, live-action Mulan actress Liu Yifei has found herself embroiled in some major controversy after posting her support for the Hong Kong Police Force (HKPF) during the ongoing Hong Kong protests. Since then, netizens have been calling others to #Boycott Mulan, and the silence that Disney has offered in response to the movement has protesters boiling.

According to a new article by The Hollywood Reporter, those in Hong Kong are planning to stage a sit-in protest at Hong Kong Disneyland sometime before August 24.

The protesters are hoping that the potential sit-in would force Disney to give a response regarding the issue – though it remains to be seen whether the protest would make the Mickey Mouse House respond. It seems like the company is hoping to get out of hot water by letting the issue die out, however, in this scenario it isn't really working for the studio.

The controversy surrounding Mulan makes us wonder about the fate of the project as well. Liu Yifei has filmed most of her scenes, so it seems impossible for Disney to up and recast the actress at this point in the film's development. Would the controversy surrounding Yifie and the #BoycottMulan movement really affect the film's ticket sales? Or would Disney head-on and release Mulan without touching the issue regarding the Hong Kong protests?

Let's wait and see.

Mulan is set to hit cinemas on March 25, 2020.
