There's been a lot of chatter about Black Panther over the past few weeks, thanks to the new Popular Film award that many think the film will win. This has resulted in Marvel campaigning for a Best Picture nomination and win since no one likes the idea of a Popular Film award. The film's lead star Chadwick Boseman made his feelings clear about the matter.
However, Boseman also had something else interesting to talk about; the citizens of Wakanda almost having British accents.
Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter via their Chatter Podcast, Boseman claims that he had to fight for the film's African accents to stay. Apparently, Marvel felt that British accents would make audiences sound more comfortable but Boseman was not a fan of this. In the end, he won and the movie is so much better for it.
"They felt that it was maybe too much for an audience to take. I felt the exact opposite — like, if I speak with a British accent, what's gonna happen when I go home? It felt to me like a deal-breaker. I was like, 'No, this is such an important factor that if we lose this right now, what else are we gonna throw away for the sake of making people feel comfortable?'"
Wakanda truly felt like a world of its own and is something Marvel should absolutely be praised for. The myths and lore that surrounded the fictional nation were so fleshed out that it made fans wish it were real. Whether that's enough to nab the film an Oscar remains to be seen but it would be cool.
Black Panther is available now on Blu-ray and digital services. Boseman is expected to reprise his role as T'Challa in Avengers 4, which opens in theaters on May 3, 2019.
