Black Panther, Jurassic World, and Solo: A Star Wars Story Recognized By PETA’s Oscat Awards

Marvel fans might be eagerly looking to the Academy Awards ceremony with Black Panther's Best Picture nomination this year, but the awards still keep coming for T'Challa's (Chadwick Boseman) first standalone film.

Not only has Black Panther been recognized by the Oscars, but People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has also chosen the film for its Oscat Awards along with other tentpole movies like Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom and Solo: A Star Wars Story.

For those who aren't familiar with the awards, the Oscats are used by the Animals in Film and Television Division in PETA to recognize and to promote what they call the "kindness to animals through positive actions, storylines and the use of computer-generated imagery (CGI) during the previous year."

PETA awarded Love, Simon and Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom the Best Seaworld Side-Eye Award, a category which raises awareness that exploiting animals for entertainment and for-profit is always "cruel and dangerous."

Black Panther was assigned "The Cats Meow," an award given because of the film's CG animals, the revelation that the Jabari tribe were vegetarian, and Boseman's vegan lifestyle while training for the film. Boseman's co-star Winston Duke was named the Oscat's Best Actor for his performance as M'Baku, Black Panther's leader of the Jabari.

PETA also decided to give Donald Glover the Best Costume Award for Lando Calrissian and his fur-free jacket in Solo: A Star Wars Story.

While some of these awards might seem a bit too out of the way, it's great that PETA is recognizing films for helping raise awareness in the ethical treatment of animals.
