Black Panther 2 Star Tenoch Huerta Teases Namor’s MCU Future

While most of the buzz surrounding the upcoming Black Panther: Wakanda Forever film has been centered on the returning cast and the loss of Chadwick Boseman, this upcoming sequel to the 2018 blockbuster film has more than one mission to accomplish on its release. In addition to paying tribute to Boseman and T’Challa, Black Panther 2 will also expand the Marvel Cinematic Universe into the deep waters.

In returning to Wakanda, Marvel fans will also be introduced to the underwater world of Talocan and its ruler, Namor the Sub-Mariner. While the marketing for the upcoming Black Panther sequel has led a lot of fans to believe that Namor is the villain of the film, Namor actor Tenoch Huerta claims that the character is more than that.

When Tenoch Huerta was interviewed by Total Film about his character’s potential for spin-offs and crossovers, the actor teased Namor’s future. "I hope so! I hope so!! Because I want a bigger contract! I want more zeroes in my contract! No, I’m joking. I mean, the mythology around Namor is huge. You can be crazy with all this cultural aspect, and you can create a lot of things with Namor, because they take a fantastic source of stories and mythology and religion and everything. So I hope they decide to keep going with the character, past its own story or whatever,” Huerta said during the interview.

While Namor is sure to create a huge impression in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, much of the conversation regarding the sub-mariner is centered on the changes that Marvel Studios made in bringing the character to live-action.

Ever since the character’s debut in the comics back in 1939, Namor has been from Atlantis and not Talocan. But that is not the only difference between the MCU Namor and comic-book Namor.

In the second trailer for Black Panther 2, Winston Duke's M’Baku said that "They call him K’uk’ulkan. The Feather Serpent God," hinting that MCU Namor will be seen as a god-like figure by the people from Talocan.

Even with all the changes, Marvel Studios hasn’t completely abandoned Namor’s comic book inspirations. It was previously revealed that the MCU’s sub-mariner is also a mutant just like Ms. Marvel.

Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige also assured the fans that “We were very much true to [the comic history]," but for the MCU, they chose to go "with a revised story that makes it much more culturally specific."

MCU’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is set to be released in theaters on November 11, 2022.
