Black Panther 2 Director Explains Their 'Weird' Choice on Namor's Design

Namor is set to make his highly-anticipated MCU debut in the upcoming film Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. While they changed the origins of the character from Atlantis to Talocan, they pretty much kept the same design just like in the comics. So why did they decide to keep it that way?

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, director Ryan Coogler explained their decision why they leaned heavily on Namor's design from the comics when it comes to his look in the film which he also acknowledged to be "weird" and "doesn't necessarily go together."

"I think with making these types of movies, you've got to lean into the weird stuff, or you risk missing what makes it fun," Coogler said. "He's got really unique features and things that don't necessarily go together. He can breathe underwater, obviously, but he's got these little wings on his ankles. He's got pointy ears and walks around in his underwear. It's all fun, man."

Whether you agree with their decision to keep the design from the comics intact or not, it looks like Coogler and his team were confident with their creative choice and felt that they were also important to the character which is why they decided to keep them.

After all, if you look at the other characters from the MCU, some of the designs were also similar or leaned heavily on the source materials in the comics. However, there are also instances where they had a different design, but the personality themselves would still remain intact.

Obviously, we will never know if their design choice actually works until we see the film and see it all in context. Either way, it is just exciting to see that the character is finally making his debut in the MCU after being in the pages for several decades.
