Dragon Ball's 40th anniversary is still over a year away, but given how important the series is to the manga industry, it’s no surprise that the lead-up to the anniversary has been going on for quite some time now.

Back in August 2021, the Dragon Ball Super Gallery project began. In this project, a recreation of a Dragon Ball volume cover is released every month leading up to the series’ anniversary in December 2024.

In total, there will be 42 recreated covers, and each new artwork is made by a different manga artist.

For instance, Naruto creator Masashi Kishimoto was the first artist to take part in the project.

In the last few months, notable Shonen Jump veterans contributed their talents to the project.

For instance, Dr. Stone illustrator Boichi made his own version of Dragon Ball Volume 26 in his signature style.

Last month, it was Food Wars artist Shun Saeki’s turn to recreate a volume cover, and his artwork is an eye-catching new version of Bulma and Goku’s art.

For the 22nd entry in the project, Black Clover creator Yuki Tabata recreated Volume 40, which features Gotenks, the successful fusion of Goten and Trunks, who appeared in the Majin Buu saga.

The new artwork was only teased on Saikyo Jump’s official website and Twitter account as its official reveal will be made in the next magazine issue that will release today in Japan.

Even before its official reveal though, there are already leaks of the cover online, and they show that Tabata had an accurate recreation of Gotenks, albeit in his signature art style.

For now, there’s no word yet on the next artist that will join the project. Though based on reactions to this latest one, fans can’t wait for My Hero Academia’s Kohei Horikoshi or One Piece's Oda to join.
