Why Does Asta Have No Mana or Magic?
Mana is the source of magic power in Black Clover. It is a kind of energy that flows from the environment and within every person in the shounen anime.
It is then used to cast magic spells. But since Asta was born without magic, it clearly means he has no mana, either.
But why? In Black Clover Episode 162, it was revealed that Asta’s mother, Richita, has a unique ability to absorb other people's magic power and life force.
Therefore, when Asta was born, Richita, as expected, sucked all the mana out of her newborn baby.
She placed him in a basket and left him at Hage’s church, as she was scared she could kill him too.
Is Being Powerless Related to Asta’s Grimoire?
Being magicless might also be connected to his rare ability to cancel the mana of other people, which is the power Anti-Magic provides.
As the adventure anime progressed, Asta was able to use Anti-Magic through Liebe, a low-ranking demon.
Liebe is the original source of Anti-Magic, but since he was sealed in the Five-Leaf Clover Grimoire (now owned by Asta), the latter was able to make a Demon Union with him and share his abilities.
Moreover, Asta received swords to counter and nullify magic when he acquired his grimoire.
These are essential to win against his enemies. But the catch is: the swords drain their user of magic.
Since Asta doesn't have mana, the swords cannot take anything from him, making him the perfect person for such weapons.
Will Asta Ever Have Magic?
Somehow, Asta did get magic after he acquired the Five-Leaf Clover Grimoire.
The said grimoire contains Anti-Magic abilities, helping Asta win against his enemies.
It might be different from what Yuno and the others have, but with the help of Liebe, Asta became stronger.
It might be safe to say that being magicless is Asta’s fate, as a lot of things happened in his life the moment he was born.
But maybe those happened so he can wield the Anti-Magic swords and become who he is right now.
