Black Adam Box Office Toppled Over By Universal Pictures’ Animated Film

Before James Gunn released the first official chapter for the new DCU slate, Black Adam was initially bound to change the future for both DC Studios and Warner Bros. Not only did Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson starred in the comic book movie, but it also featured the soft return of Henry Cavill as the Man of Steel. Unfortunately, the film became a big box office disappointment.

Apart from becoming a big box office disappointment, the DC film was toppled over the box office list with Universal Pictures’ animated feature film, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish. Now, according to box office analyst Gitesh Pandya, The Last Wish earned $158.5 million at the domestic box office, with an international earning of $235.2 million, which beats the global box office of Black Adam ($392 million).

Puss in Boots: The Last Wish recently became the third animated film to cross the domestic total of $150 million during the pandemic, surpassing even the likes of Disney animated films (which have yet to follow in their footsteps this pandemic)! The Last Wish also makes Universal Pictures’ third animated film to gain this success, apart from Minions: The Rise of Gru ($369.5 million) and Sing 2 ($162.8 million).

It was revealed that Black Adam generated merely $392 million at the international box office (on a reported movie budget of $195 million, with marketing and production costs being between $80 and $100 million). Seeing its failure in its box office returns, this rendered Gunn’s decision to cancel any possibilities of a Black Adam 2.

However, the new DC Studios boss did promise that the Chapter One slate, Gods & Monsters, would officially mark the “new era” for the DCEU, starting off in 2025 with Superman: Legacy, with a new hiring cast ongoing for the upcoming films.

DC Studios’ Superman: Legacy is currently slated for release on July 11, 2025.
