Birds of Prey Writer on How the Film Focuses on Female Friendships

It looks like DC's writing team for Birds of Prey (And The Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) actually didn't take that many references from other female team-up or girl gang movies for the upcoming DC film.

Birds of Prey writer Christina Hodson just recently spoke in an interview with Heroic Hollywood during a press junket for the upcoming film. During the discussion, the entertainment news outlet noted how different Birds of Prey was from all of the other movies in the DC Extended Universe, not only in terms of humor and style but in terms of being the first female team-up movie set in the DC film franchise. Hodson was then asked whether the film was inspired by any other girl gang movies, and to our surprise, the writer said no.

"No, actually not," Hodson told the publication. "I think most of our references were very unexpected and strange. Mostly Margot and I were just kind of inspired by the girlfriends that we have and the relationships we have and wanting to see those kind of dynamics on-screen."

I think female relationships and friendships are something that's important to see on the big screen. We don't often get to see female characters forming important female relationships in films. That's why Hollywood has the Bechdel test which notes whether or a movie has (1) at least two women in it (2) who talk to each other about topics (3) other than a man.

According to Hodson, female relationships was something that was really important to Robbie and it was something that she and the actress spoke about from day one of the project. We can't wait and see how this impacted the film. Does it become more meaningful because the movie focuses on friendships rather than team-ups? Let's wait and see.

Birds of Prey (And The Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) is set to premiere on February 7, 2020.
