Birds of Prey Will Explore Gotham City Through Harley Quinn's Eyes

Gotham City has always been an interesting setting in Batman comics, often being its own character as it supposedly shapes people and "helps" people find their true selves. Scott Snyder's Batman run during the New 52 claimed that the city was transformative and it's something that has stuck in the minds of many a fan. Birds of Prey (And The Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) will give us a very different look at Gotham City.

Why? Because we're going to see it through Harley Quinn's eyes.

Director Cathy Yan spoke about how the Gotham City we'll see in Birds of Prey is going to be different from what's usually shown in Batman media. While still being a dark and unsafe place, Harley's version of the troublesome city will be a bit more colorful, with much more positive people. Bad things still happen - Harley is fighting a bunch of gangsters after all - but no one has given up hope.

Here is how Yan described Harley's version of Gotham (via Variety):

"I was thinking this Gotham should feel different. It's Harley Quinn's world. It's a little scrappier, it's a little more outer borough. On top of that, I also wanted to make sure that it felt heightened and colorful. It's gritty, but at the same time, people are having fun. People haven't given up yet. It's not a sad world where nothing works."

It's always interesting to see how a character views the world since they tend to give the audience a whole new world. Harley's version of Gotham City sounds fascinating and it will be nice to see a version of the city that isn't completely crime-filled and hopeless for once. That's kind of funny too since Harley Quinn is the lead character and is a criminal.

Birds of Prey will be coming out on February 7.
