Birds of Prey Officially Casts Black Canary and Huntress

Warner Bros. and DC just took some major steps in the right direction for the upcoming Birds of Prey movie. Not only does it have a proper 2020 release date, but the studio has now cast two of its three leading ladies; Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Huntress and Jurnee Smollett-Bell as Black Canary. Margot Robbie will reprise her role as Harley Quinn from the Suicide Squad.

Confirmed by Variety, the movie will have these three characters teaming up to take down a Gotham crime lord, who has yet to be named. Popular theories claim that it will be Black Mask, one of the bigger C-list Batman villains, but there are other choices to choose from. If they wanted, Penguin could be the crime lord to match the whole Birds motif.

It's not yet known which version of Huntress Winstead will be playing, though we do know that she is a former mafia princess whose family was killed in a mob hit. Smollett-Bell will still be good old Dinah Lance, who seems to be faithful to her comic book counterpart. Harley Quinn hasn't been given a character biography yet, though we can assume that this takes place after escaping Arkham Asylum in Suicide Squad.

Renee Montoya and Cassandra Cain have also been rumored for the film, which should add plenty of interest from DC fans. Montoya is a Gotham city cop and one of the few open LGBT characters DC has, while Cain has been Batgirl and is currently going by the Orphan alias. The lack of Barbara Gordon is pretty surprising since she was a big part of the original comic books, but they could always surprise up.

Birds of Prey is slated for a February 7, 2020 release. The movie will be directed by Cathy Yan.
