Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) may not be the strongest entry in the DC Extended Universe but it was still met with positive reviews from fans and in my opinion, it was an overall enjoyable film all things considered and it's certainly miles better than 2016's Suicide Squad.

However, not a lot of people got to enjoy the film when it came out last year due to the COVID-19 virus starting to make its presence felt in the world and the unfortunate circumstance may have led to the film being poorly received by some film critics. It also failed to do well financially, only earning over 200 million at the global box office which I guess is pretty decent for a film that came out just as the pandemic hit.

Still, the creators of the film may have a reason to rejoice and celebrate the existence of the film after all. In a stunning turn of events, the "divisive" DCEU flick headlined by Margot Robbie is shortlisted for two major awards in the upcoming 2021 Academy Awards.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences unveiled the official shortlist for the 93rd Oscars yesterday which consists of nine categories. Surprisingly, Bird of Prey has made the cut and advanced to the next round of nominations in two categories — Makeup and Hairstyling and Visual Effects. However, there's still no guarantee that the film will make it to the official nominees' list.

To give you a quick refresher in case you forgot, David Ayer's Suicide Squad shocked the world back in 2017 after bagging the Academy Award for Makeup and Hairstyling, the same trophy Birds Of Prey is currently eyeing. The question is, will BOP be able to replicate the Oscar success of Suicide Squad? I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

Birds of Prey is available for streaming on HBO Max.
