Birds of Prey Director Cathy Yan Found Camaraderie in Wonder Woman Director Patty Jenkins

Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) might have nothing to do with Gal Gadot's Diana Prince, but it looks like the film's director Cathy Yan got some pretty great advice from Wonder Woman 1984 director Patty Jenkins.

Yan actually went to Jenkins for advice before she released Birds of Prey. The filmmaker wanted notes from the only other female director in the DC Extended Universe, and so Yan decided to approach Jenkins while the filmmaker was working on her Wonder Woman sequel.

According to Yan, she had discussed Birds of Prey with Jenkins a number of times while she was working on Wonder Woman 1984, and she enjoyed the camaraderie she shared with the DCEU's very first female director.

"She's awesome — there was a lot for us to talk about it," Yan told The Wrap, "I called her a bunch of times throughout and she was very much working on ‘Wonder Woman 1984' at the same time, and she gave a lot of great advice. It's nice to have that camaraderie. It's not even just among female directors — directing is actually quite lonely. There aren't that many of us and what we do is pretty singular so I'm always very curious talking to other directors."

We're glad to hear that Yan found support in Jenkins. The Wonder Woman director helped pave the way for female-led films in the DCEU. Things might have been different for the DC film franchise had Wonder Woman not been as successful as it had been with its overwhelmingly positive reviews from both fans and critics. We're glad to see the women in DC helping each other out.

Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) is currently screening in cinemas.
