Better Call Saul Season 6 Episode 10, Nippy, diverged from the series’ original timeline and went post-Breaking Bad to show more of Gene Takovic (Bob Odenkirk), aka Saul Goodman, aka Jimmy McGill. As some don’t see its connection after Episode 9’s Kim Wexler (Rhea Seehorn) and Jimmy’s split, it seems to set up the stage for Walter White (Bryan Cranston) and Jesse Pinkman’s (Aaron Paul) appearance.

Fans didn’t expect to see a Gene-centric, black-and-white episode in Better Call Saul Season 6 Episode 10 after Episode 9’s major cliffhanger. Thankfully, writer Alison Tatlock revealed why the show featured the post-Breaking Bad timeline for an entire episode.

Better Call Saul Season 6 Episode 10 Returned to Post-Breaking Bad Timeline

Fans saw Jimmy as Gene, the Cinnabon manager in Omaha, Nebraska, in Better Call Saul Season 6 Episode 10.

Cab driver Jeff (Pay Healy) recognized Gene as the famous criminal lawyer despite disguising himself as Gene.

So, to silent Jeff, he returned to his old “Slippin’ Jimmy” ways and befriended his mom, Marion (Carol Burnett), and offered him to be in “the game.”

He then planned an elaborate store heist that was perfectly executed, giving Jeff what he wanted in exchange for his silence. As Gene demanded him to say “we’re done,” it seemed to give him the freedom to continue his guise without any threats.

The Decision to Bring Back Gene in Better Call Saul Season 6 Episode 10

So, what made them decide to bring back Gene for the first time in Better Call Saul Season 6 Episode 10?

“After the emotionally intense ending of 609 and the leap forward into full-Saul territory, we felt that it would be exciting and surprising and hopefully delighting, ultimately, to shift gears and pop into our black-and-white future,” Tatlock told The Hollywood Reporter. “We didn’t know for sure that it would be a 610 event, but once we got there, it felt like the right moment. We almost felt like we were starting something new.”

She added that everything about it felt different.

“The score is different, the cast is somewhat different, and we’ve never had a fully black-and-white episode before,” she continued. “So there were so many new elements in this episode that it felt right to mix it up now that this is the second half of the final season.”

True enough, the sixth season felt new for premiering without featuring a flash-forward scene of Gene.

Each of the previous seasons started with a glimpse of Jimmy’s future as Gene, but the sixth and final season began with a house tour of Saul after his Breaking Bad disappearance.

As the show is on its final season, Screen Rant noted it was saving to continue Gene’s story for later.

A Reference to Walter White’s Appearance in Better Call Saul Season 6

Better Call Saul Season 6 Episode 10 also featured the first time Gene referenced Walter White when he talked about the 50-year-old high school chemistry teacher, who came to his office broke and got a pile of cash one year later.

With that said, the show seemed to set the stage for Walter White’s appearance.
