Ben Affleck’s Batman Reprisal in The Flash Doesn’t Mean Full DCEU Return

DC fans were met with surprising news yesterday – Ben Affleck would be reprising his role as Batman in the DC Extended Universe's The Flash.

Fans weren't expecting the announcement. Affleck had been yo-yoing between staying and leaving the DCEU for years on end. Finally, in January 2019, after years of keeping fans on the edge of their seats, the critically-acclaimed director confirmed what fans were suspecting all along – Affleck was retiring from the Batman role.

While many were disappointed by Affleck's decision to leave the role (despite the backlash that the actor received when Warner Brothers had cast him as the Dark Knight, fans began considering Affleck as one of the best iterations of Batman), the actor seemed to have too much on his plate with his struggles with alcoholism and his divorce from his ex-wife, Jennifer Garner.

With Matt Reeve's The Batman movie underway, DC fans have begun to accept Robert Pattinson as the new Batman of the DCEU.

Then, all of a sudden, The Wrap announces that Affleck is set to return in The Flash. After addressing screenplay issues with director Andy Muschietti, the actor has reportedly agreed to star in the project.

Unfortunately, this doesn't necessarily mean a full return to the DCEU. According to the trade's report, " there will be no other films with Affleck's Batman or an HBO Max show as has been rumored online amongst fanboy outlets."

This means that fan's won't get to see Affleck in The Suicide Squad, Wonder Woman 3, or any other DC movie outside of The Flash. Unless DC changes its mind. We could get another surprise announcement in the next two years or so. Let's wait and see.
