Batman: The Animated Series Writer Reveals Which Beyond Story Arc He Detests

There is little doubt that Batman Beyond is one of the most beloved stories about the Caped Crusader's future. However, one writer isn't happy with a certain plot point in the animated series. Batman: The Animated Series' Alan Burnett has just revealed that he doesn't accept the idea that Terry McGinnis possesses Bruce Wayne's DNA.

In a special episode of Justice League Unlimited, Terry's origin story was revealed to have a wild connection to Bruce. In the episode, Amanda Waller decides that there should always be a Batman and goes on to overwrite Terry's DNA with that of Bruce's. Interestingly, this is the one thing that Burnett claims he still rejects and he stated that even artist Bruce Timm agrees with him.

"I never wanted (Terry) on Batman Beyond to have Bruce's DNA...and so I don't accept it. And Bruce (Timm) and I are friendly about this," Burnett said on the Above and Beyond Batmanpodcast. He then added that to be "heir to the throne, they don't have to have the same DNA. It's your own willpower that makes you the superhero."

It's an interesting point considering that this is one detail that Burnett had no control over. In addition to that, Timm had his own ideas on how Terry is somehow connected to Bruce in his own way. Perhaps this factoid could eventually be undone in future Batman titles.

Do you agree that Terry shouldn't have Bruce's DNA? Sound off in the comments below.
