Batgirl Star Leslie Grace Teases Michael Keaton's Incredible Batman Return

Leslie Grace's Batgirl officially wrapped filming last March, and we can expect the film to hit HBO Max as early as 2022. Alongside Grace as the titular character, the film will also bring back DC veteran Michael Keaton reprising his role as Batman, which will be the actor's first return in the superhero franchise in 30 years after last starring in Tim Burton's Batman Returns in 1992.

Batgirl is the live-action adaptation of Barbara Gordon as the new heroine of Gotham City. While the plot of the film is being kept secret, Keaton's comeback in the film has been a hot topic for solid DC fans. According to recent reports, Keaton will play the retired older version of Bruce Wayne, who will serve as a mentor for Grace's new bat heroine as she finds herself entangled with Gotham's criminal underworld.

Now that the Batman spin-off is in post-production, Leslie Grace shared her praises on co-star Michael Keaton, and how grateful she is to be part of the franchise alongside the DC veteran.

Speaking to Variety, Batgirl star Leslie Grace looks back on her time with Michael Keaton.

When Keaton first appeared on the set, Grace recalled how directors Billal Fallah and Adil El Arbi were like two little excited kids, "It was wild for everyone. Our directors were like two little kids. They’re legit Batman nerds openly. He’s Batman, man! I couldn’t even believe that I was sharing space with Batman. I want to say more, but I can’t. It was insane, surreal, incredible. It was the stuff of dreams really."

The actress went on to explain how she was so nervous around J.K Simmons, who plays her father, Commissioner Gordon. "And J.K. Simmons playing my dad. That’s my pop. I was so nervous because all I could hear in my head was his voice in “Whiplash.” Like what would he do and say if I didn’t get something right? [Laughs]. Then we became the best of friends. And just he told me all his great stories of starting out and being a waiter and working in a pizza shop and trying to be an actor and doing theater."

Michael Keaton is no stranger to massive superhero franchises. Keaton has recently joined the MCU as the classic Spider-Man villain Vulture, and even became a more controversial topic after Keaton's Vulture was spotted in Jared Leto's Morbius, in a post-credit scene hinting at a potential crossover in the future.

What makes Keaton's return to the Batgirl film is how the actor will reprise the Batman role again after three decades. Although generations have passed since the actor played Batman on the big screens, and several actors have also worn the Batman mantle following him, Keaton still remains one of the fan-favorite Bruce Wayne and seeing him again as the character will certainly be nostalgic.

According to recent reports, Keaton will have at least two appearances in the DCEU, specifically with The Flash and Grace's Batgirl. For now, fans are looking forward to his influence on Grace's new heroine, and how the two's relationship will prosper in the film.

Batgirl is set to premiere on HBO Max sometime in 2022.
