Baby Yoda has Officially Become a Slang Word

Star Wars: The Mandalorian was an indubitable success. Not only did the live-action Star Wars series manage to attract subscribers to Disney's new streaming site, Disney+, but it also managed to unite a fractured Star Wars fanbase.

While the series success comes from its compact storytelling, we can't deny that a lot of the series' charm comes from The Mandalorian's breakout character, Baby Yoda. The doe-eyed 50-year-old child introduced in the very first episode of the series stole viewers' hearts the very moment he appeared in the show.

Now, it looks like Baby Yoda has become a slang word.

Dictionary.com just recently added Baby Yoda in its latest Slang Update, defining the title as the popular name for the unnamed child starring in The Mandalorian.

"Baby Yoda is the popular name for a character known as the Child in the Star Wars TV series The Mandalorian," the website description reads, "He is a member of the same species as the beloved Star Wars character, Yoda."

"Baby Yoda's adorable, lovable appearance helped make the character a widespread meme online," Dictionary.com writes.

The nickname is the latest Star Wars term to make its way into a dictionary. The Oxford English Dictionary added the Star Wars words "Jedi," "Palawan," and "lightsaber" in October 2019.

It's exciting to see Baby Yoda as a brand new slang. We can't wait to see the Baby Yoda hype come back when The Mandalorian returns with its second season on Disney+ in October this year.

Star Wars: The Mandalorian Season 1 is available for streaming on Disney+.
