Avengers: Infinity War was nothing short of a success. Not only was the film showered in overwhelmingly positive reviews from fans and critics; it also raked in a shipload of profit at the box office.
Finishing its theatrical run, Infinity War has now become one of the most successful films in the US. Box Office Report just recently calculated the film's earnings after its exit from cinemas, and now it looks like the Marvel crossover movie's haul has come up to more than $678 million in North America. That's a whole lot –enough to pass the Titanic's $659 million, a domestic box office number that's been earned over multiple theatrical releases. Now, together with its massive domestic haul, Infinity War has just become the fourth highest grossing film in the US.
Though it might not come as a surprise to the Marvel fanbase, it seems like the film didn't manage to make it past the third-highest grossing movie, Marvel Cinematic Universe's Black Panther. Though Infinity War beat Black Panther by a mile at the global box office, T'Challa's (Chadwick Boseman) standalone movie ended its run with more than $700 million at the domestic box office.
Infinity War is supposed to serve as the first installment in the Russo Brother's two-part Avengers movie culminating the last ten years of the MCU, so it's a bit surprising that Black Panther won the race for the top in the US box office. But then again, there was so much anticipation over Black Panther, the very first all-black cast comic book movie.
Black Panther was a cultural phenomenon, a film that proved to the world that viewers valued diversity and representation in their films.
Infinity War's sequel, Avengers 4, is set to hit cinemas May 3, 2019.
