Avengers: Infinity War Bet On Black Panther’s Success For Its Final Scene

Having the climactic battle in Avengers: Infinity War get set in Wakanda might have been pretty obvious to fans after the success of Black Panther, however, Marvel had no idea that T'Challa's (Chadwick Boseman) first standalone movie would be as successful as it was before working on the Wakanda Battle scene for its third Avengers movie.

Speaking in the audio commentary for Avengers: Infinity War which just recently saw release on digital HD (via ComicBook.com), the film's co-writer Stephen McFeely and its co-director Joe Russo decided to reveal that early test screenings showed that audiences didn't show the same excitement seeing the Battle of Wakanda the same way fans were excited during later tests.

"Listen, a year ahead of time, we had no idea ‘Wakanda Forever' was going to be amazing," McFeely explained while Captain America's (Chris Evans) group first finds themselves in Wakanda . "We tested this movie a few times, and when we got to this scene, most of the audiences, say in January and early February, went, ‘Oh this is an interesting place, I've never been here before.' After mid-February, once Black Panther had come out, this scene gets a huge cheer. It just rewards you investing in these characters. I shouldn't have been surprised, but boy, I was really pleased."

According to Russo, he and his team made it a big point to set the third act of Infinity War in Wakanda.

"It was a big conversation early on. I said, ‘We're going to set a lot of the third act in Wakanda because if you're going to go anywhere in the world to protect a McGuffin from an evil alien, it's going to be Wakanda,'" Russo added.

Luckily, the decision of the film's creative team paid off. Having the climactic battle take place in Wakanda definitely pleased audiences, not just because they could return to the glorious African city but also because it meant that they could see a few fan-favorite faces like Okoye's (Danai Gurira) and Shuri's (Letitia Wright).

Avengers: Infinity War is currently available on digital HD and is set for release on Blu-Ray on August 14.
