Avengers: Endgame’s Three-Hour Runtime May Hurt The Film’s Box Office Numbers

Marvel fans might be happy about Avengers: Endgame's runtime knowing that the extra minutes mean more action on the big screen, but could the film's whopping three-hour length spell trouble at the box office?

According to Variety, the bladder-testing runtime of the second entry in Joe and Anthony Russo's two-part Avengers movie may very well pose some trouble to Endgame's opening weekend box office numbers. Being the longest Marvel comic book movie to date with a runtime of three hours and six minutes may sound great for fans looking for more action, but Endgame's massive runtime definitely means fewer screenings per venue every day.

Some might not know, but cinema owners generally give films three hours for every showing, giving films enough time to run trailers before the actual screening of the film and time for janitors to clean up the theater after the film's end credits. However, Endgame leaves very little time for both of that, forcing cinemas to extend their allowance for both cleaning and for screening trailers.

Variety says that this will cut at least one screening at every location daily, which may potentially harm the film's opening weekend. Sure, anticipation for Endgame might be sky-high, but fewer screenings still mean less money for the film.

Right now Avengers: Endgame is tracking somewhere between $200 million and $260 million during its opening weekend. Fewer screenings might make the film gross lower than that, but we're fairly certain that Disney will find a way to make up for the missed screenings.

Avengers: Endgame premieres April 26, 2019.
