Avengers: Endgame Writers Reveal Why Captain America Wasn’t Allowed to Actually Die

Joe and Anthony Russo might have given Captain America (Chris Evans) the perfect ending in Avengers: Endgame, however, the directors never really featured Steve Roger's death in the film.

Now, speaking in an interview with Vanity Fair,Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely explain why Captain America wasn't allowed to die in the film. Fans might have anticipated the possibility of Captain America's death in Endgame, however, the writers knew that there wouldn't be any point where Steve would die in the movie.

"We realized over the course of the movies that Cap and Tony were on crossing arcs," McFeely said in the discussion with the entertainment news outlet.

According to the writer, the perfect ending for Cap wasn't about sacrifice. Steve was always ready to sacrifice himself for the good of everyone else. Endgame had to feature an ending where Steve would be able to move on, to get his own life.

On the other hand, the team realized that Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.), a hero who started out as a selfish man, had to make the sacrifice in the film.

"Cap, who had started as completely selfless and was jumping on grenades willy-nilly, was becoming more self-interested. Not to say selfish, but if you watch Civil War, particularly, he's making decisions based on what he wants, even if it breaks up the Avengers," Markus went on and explained, "And Tony started as the brash billionaire playboy, and the stakes are growing for him, the responsibility's growing for him. We realized at one point, late in 2015, that for Steve to be his best self, he was going to have to get a life, and for Tony to be his best self, he might have to lose his."

The two made the right choice.

Not only did everyone love seeing Captain America age living his own life happily with Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell), but hearts broke seeing Iron Man sacrifice his life for the sake of everyone else. It was the perfect ending for both heroes.
