Avengers: Endgame Makes History With Its Oscar Snub

Avengers: Endgame might have been the very first film to unseat Avatar as the highest grossing film in Hollywood History, however, despite its commercial and critical success, the superhero team-up movie failed to gain as much recognition from the Oscars as fans had hoped.

The second installment in Joe and Anthony Russo's two-part Avengers movie event only managed to earn itself a nomination for Best Visual Effects at Oscars, and during the awarding ceremony of the 92nd Academy Awards, Endgame lost the award to 1917.

The Oscar snub means a lot in Hollywood. According to Fandom, the Oscar-less Endgame marks the very first time that a film which has become the "highest grossing film of all time" failed to win an award at the Academy Awards.

Gone with the Wind which was released in 1939 held the "highest grossing film of all time" for 37 years. The film also did exceptionally well at the Oscars, winning eight Academy Awards including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress in a Leading Role, and Best Actress in a supporting role. The Sound of Music which was released in 1966 briefly took the title for "highest grossing film of all time," and then went on to win five Oscars.

The Godfather won three after nabbing eleven nominations. Jaws won three. Star Wars was nominated for ten awards and then won four Oscars. ET won four Oscars as well. Jurassic Park was nominated for three different categories and then won all of those nominated awards. Titanic was overwhelmingly successful, winning eleven awards at the Oscars. Avatar was nominated for nine different categories, only to win in Best Cinematography, Best Visual Effects, and Best Production Design.

While it's a bit disappointing to see that Endgame has broken the tradition of having the "highest grossing movie of all time" earn recognition at the Oscars, fans have to remember that the Academy doesn't usually recognize comic book movies. Besides, there were a lot of great films vying for attention this year.
