Avengers: Endgame is the First Film in History to Make Over $1 Billion on its Opening Weekend

Everyone knew that Avengers: Endgame was already going to make all the money when it came out, but probably no one anticipated that the movie would actually make history. Just in, Endgame is the first ever film in history to earn over $1 billion on its opening weekend.

The Walt Disney Company reports that Avengers: Endgame has made their global debut earning $1.209 billion for the studio. Braking it down, the film has earned $350 million domestically and $859 million internationally.

Disney chairman Alan Horn had this to say about the historical feat:

"Kevin Feige and the Marvel Studios team have continued to challenge notions of what is possible at the movie theater both in terms of storytelling and at the box office… Though Endgame is far from an end for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, these first 22 films constitute a sprawling achievement, and this weekend's monumental success is a testament to the world they've envisioned, the talent involved, and their collective passion, matched by the irrepressible enthusiasm of fans around the world."

It's worth noting that the last MCU film, Captain Marvel, had also surpassed the billion dollar mark, but the film needed a month to achieve that number—Endgame did it in a week. Just imagine how much more money it would make during the rest of its theatrical run.

Of course, we should also find out what Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige had to say about the film making history. Feige, who has been involved with the MCU way before Disney took over, says, "From the very beginning with Iron Man, all we've wanted to do was tell stories that brought these characters to life onscreen the way we've experienced them as fans of the comics… That we've had so many other successes in this journey leading to this unbelievable result with Avengers: Endgame has been almost entirely due to the fans around the world who have supported us through it all. Our directors, Anthony and Joe Russo, and our writers, Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, really brought this story home, and I am also incredibly thankful for our cast and filmmakers from across the MCU and all who've worked so hard to make these films the best they can be, including the amazing teams at Marvel Studios and Disney. And of course, without Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, none of this would have been possible."

With a billion-dollar opening, there's no doubt that Avengers: Endgame is set to break all the box office records as it continues its theatrical run. Infinity War was able to make a worldwide gross of $2 billion. What are the odds that Endgame is going to double that number?
