There is little doubt that Avengers: Endgame was an expensive movie to make considering the sheer number of A-listers in the cast. But which scene proved to be the most expensive one to film? The Russo brothers have a truly unexpected answer.
Joe and Anthony Russo joined Endgame writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely in an interview with IMDb at the recent San Diego Comic-Con. When interviewer Kevin Smith brought up how the funeral scene appeared to be a truly pricey shot considering the number of stars in the sequence, everyone was quick to agree.
"We used to joke, and I don't know if it's joking, it's probably the most expensive shot in movie history. That's a lot of salary on the screen there," Joe said. "At the very least it's the most expensive day of extras in movie history, outside of Cleopatra."
"For people to just stand there, they're not even moving," McFeely added.
Interestingly, Joe shared how they managed to get everyone to be in the scene without revealing that it was for Tony Stark's funeral.
"They were all brought there under this pretense that they were coming for a wedding — it's kind of heartbreaking to think about now — but they all have managers, and agents, and hair and make up, and we can't tell anybody what we're up to, because it can leak through one of a thousand sources," Joe said.
"So they were all brought there under the pretense that they're coming for a wedding, and the day they got there and we started to dress them in the black outfits, they said, ‘This is a very strange wedding.' We said, ‘It's because it's actually a funeral.'"
There is little doubt that it was great to see so many stars in one location but it was also heartbreaking to realize that they were all gathered to pay tribute to the man that started it all.
Avengers: Endgame is officially the highest-grossing film of all time.
