Avengers: Endgame Directors Defend Thor's Surprising Arc

Avengers: Endgame was filled with surprises, taking characters in different directions and turning a time travel story into something funny and exciting, when it could have been done poorly. However, fans also had a number of complaints, like how they handled Captain America's arc and the fact that Thor was turned into a fat slob after killing Thanos in the very beginning.

Many took umbrage with the fact that they turned Thor into a fat alcoholic who hates himself and how he never turned back into his fit, handsome self. There was even a shot in one of the trailers that showed him in good, fighting shape, so fans were shocked to see the legendary Asgardian stay fat for the remainder of the film.

Unsurprisingly, The Russo Brothers defended this move and felt that it was important to show him be broken throughout. This was effective since it made his arc feel more personal. Here is how the directing duo defended it to Entertainment Weekly:

"How is everyone processing their grief? We wanted them all to process it in very different ways. And Thor is an exceedingly tragic character who was built from the time he was a boy to be a king. What is the distance that a character like that can travel, a god? Somebody, especially, who looks like Chris Hemsworth?"
"Even though there's a lot of fun to be had in the movie with his physical condition, it's not a gag. It's a manifestation of where he is on a character level, and we think it's one of the most relatable aspects of him. I mean, it's a very common sort of response to depression and pain."
"What would happen if that character became extremely angry and started to punish himself and didn't care anymore? What would happen to him? He's an alcoholic now, he doesn't care about anything. He doesn't care about himself."

So, what did you guys think of Fat Thor? Did it make Avengers: Endgame better or worse for you? The film is showing in theaters now.
