Austin Butler has been getting positive reviews for his role in Elvis, earning him an Oscar buzz.

Now, casting director Denise Chamian, CSA, talked about how they ended up casting the actor for the movie instead of big-name artists like Harry Styles, Ansel Elgort and Miles Teller.

Chamian first saw the Zoey 101 star when she was casting for the movie The Maze Runner back in 2013.

Though he didn’t get a part because he was too young, he remained on her radar. In fact, she almost cast him in Top Gun: Maverick to play the role of Rooster.

However, as he was deemed too young again, the role went to Miles Teller. Anyhow, things started to change when Chamian prioritized Austin Butler to play the iconic master showman in Elvis.

Though Luhrmann had his own ideas for the movie’s lead star, picking between Teller and Styles, Austin Butler managed to prove himself.

For Chamian, Austin Butler has always been mesmerizing to watch.

When she saw him in Once Upon a Time…In Hollywood, she told Variety that he had “something very special” that other people didn’t always have.

“It’s almost the way he looks into the camera,” she explained. “He knows the camera and lets the camera see him, and that is really what is so captivating .”

So, how did she find Elvis in him?

“From the very beginning, there was something about Austin to me that was a little reminiscent of Elvis,” she said.

Though she knew she could sing, she had no idea how well it was. But when she sat down with Luhrmann, he already had some people he wanted to test for the role.

“He had Ansel Elgort and Miles Teller. He later added Harry Styles to that,” she continued. “I had a list of my own people. When we got to Austin, I said, ‘This is your Elvis,’ and Baz just looked at me. It’s a pretty big statement to make.”

From there, the rest is history.
