The infamous door prop from James Cameron’s Titanic, which inspired fiery debates on the Internet, is now in the hands of a lucky auction buyer who bought it for $718,750.
For decades, the Titanic door prop has been the subject of debates among fans who are convinced that there was room enough for both Jack and Rose to survive and those who don’t share the sentiment. Now, it is the personal property of a buyer who acquired the prop from an auction.
This is because the prop was recently sold to an unnamed buyer during the highly anticipated Heritage Auctions’ Treasures from Planet Hollywood event. This lucky buyer pledged $718,750 to beat the other interested buyers and gain ownership of the film memorabilia, marking a significant moment in the history of movie collectables.
Along with the door, Kate Winslet’s chiffon cake during the iconic staircase scene in Titanic’s ending was also sold during the auction for $125,000. The auction also featured unique items such as the axe used by Jack Nicholson in The Shining, Indy’s bullwhip in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, and the can of shaving cream used for stealing dino embryos in Jurassic Park, among others, all of which are rare and valuable pieces of movie history.
Many fans have debated whether or not there was a possibility that Jack, played by Leonardo DiCaprio, could’ve gotten on the door with Winslet’s rose and survived the aftermath of the sinking.
To resolve the issue, James Cameron conducted a scientific experiment with a hypothermia expert to see if the door could hold two people. Cameron then claimed that the experiment’s results matched the outcome in his film—only one person would have survived.
“[Jack] needed to die,” the director concluded.
