After its announcement in January, Attack on Titan The Final Season Part 3 revealed that its first half will be a one-hour special that will be released this March.

This reveal was made via the show’s official Twitter account, which detailed the schedule and the release plan for Part 3’s unusual release format.

While the first two parts of The Final Season aired like a normal anime series, it seems that the show’s finale will go with a different format.

Attack on Titan is one of the most popular anime shows globally, though it’s fair to say that the naming scheme for its seasons is confusing, even for series veterans.

The first two seasons were straightforward enough, though the third season began this trend of splitting one season into multiple parts.

Its Final Season is probably the worst offender. Despite its name, the “season” has now been split into three parts, with the first two having aired in early 2020 and early 2021, respectively.

Essentially, the first two parts of The Final Season can be considered their own cours, given that they are composed of 16 and 12 episodes, respectively.

The same can’t be said for Part 3 though, as the first half will be a one-hour special. Not a lot of details were revealed yet about what this special will cover.

There’s also no info on what to expect when it comes to the second half. It’s possible that the second half will be another special, though it can also be a series of standard-length TV episodes.

The one-hour special will air on Japan’s NHK General on March 4 at 12:25 AM JST. This special will serve as the lead-up to the climactic events of the entire series, which will be shown in the second half.

Most of the voice actors from the previous parts (excluding those whose characters have met their demise) will return for Part 3. Also returning is director Yuichiro Hayashi.

Right now, the second half is confirmed to be released later in 2023. Though there’s no info yet on when exactly it will air.

It is expected that the one-hour special will also be released outside Japan via streaming services such as Crunchyroll, but an official announcement has yet to be made.
