Aquaman might be James Wan's first comic book movie, but it isn't the filmmaker's first attempt at a comic book movie. The director who's become one of the biggest names in horror movie making after helming films like The Conjuring, Insidious, and Saw says that he once tried to bring back Blade after Marvel completed its Blade trilogy before the beginning of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Sitting down with the hosts of the Happy Sad Confusedpodcast, Wan recalled the first time he really looked into directing for potential comic book franchises. According to Wan, right after directing Conjuring 1, he actually tried to pitch a new movie for Blade, hoping that a studio would be interested in rebooting the franchise.
"Years back, a couple of years back, I think it was right after Conjuring 1 that I went into a particular studio and told them, ‘Hey, I'm a big fan of Blade. Would you guys be interested in rebooting Blade?'" Wan said during the interview. "Obviously, nothing came out of that! But that was my first intro into looking at potential comic book properties."
Of course, back then it was way too early to reboot Blade. Despite the poor aging of its CGI, at the time Blade had been nothing short of successful, setting the stage for even more comic book film adaptations.
Now that we've officially reached the 20th year of Blade, a reboot might actually work, especially if it comes from a sure-fire win studio like Marvel. Who knows, Wan can try pitching again, this time to Marvel Studios. For now, though, the director's busy with Aquaman, a film that many consider to be another major success for the DCEU.
