Aquaman's Jason Momoa to Star in Minecraft Live-Action Film

We’re now at the age where a lot of popular video games are getting film adaptations although only a few of them get to be both a critical and box office success. However, nevertheless, Hollywood studios continue to keep on making them as they see a lot of value in those IPs that would hopefully become one of their successful franchises. Now, another popular video game is set to have its own film adaptation with the star of one of the most successful comic book films in recent years.

According to The Ankler, Jason Momoa is in negotiations to star in Warner Bros.' Minecraft live-action film based on the popular video game of the same name. Nacho Libre director Jared Hess is attached to helm the project. Mary Parent and Roy Lee will produce along with Jill Messick, who is getting a posthumous credit as she worked on the film prior to her death in 2018. Jon Berg, Cale Boyter, and Jon Spaihts will serve as executive producers. Mojang Studios, the Swedish developer behind the game, is also involved in the production.

In case you’re not familiar with the game, Minecraft is a sandbox video game where players can create their own 3D world using blocks by extracting materials, crafting tools, and building structures. It is currently the best-selling video game of all time with over 238 million copies sold and nearly 140 million monthly active users as of 2021.

Momoa is known for playing Aquaman in the DCEU with his next film in the franchise, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, set to be released next year. He recently starred in Dune, Zack Snyder's Justice League, and Sweet Girl and currently stars in the Apple TV+ series See. He also recently joined the cast of the tenth Fast and Furious film where he is set to play the villain.

Given the popularity of the game, it is inevitable that Minecraft will also get a film adaptation. While there have been several attempts on this project in the past several years, it looks like this one will actually move forward since the studio's lease on the rights will expire in January so production has to begin soon. Momoa is also an interesting choice for the project. While we don't know yet what kind of take this film adaptation on the game will be, we do know that Momoa is a great leading actor and can headline a film like this.
