The Apothecary Diaries may have premiered a bit later than other Fall 23 shows, but it has become one of the top anime of the season. Aside from getting a lot of praise, the anime also helped The Apothecary Diaries manga and light novel series get a big boost in printed copies.

As the anime continues its run, publisher Imagica Infos revealed that the anime’s manga and light novel source materials have enjoyed a noticeable print increase.

This can be attributed to the anime which has gotten a lot of attention and acclaim from fans.

Many seasonal anime viewers were already excited about The Apothecary Diaries thanks to the visually stunning trailers that were shared to hype the series up.

It also helped that the anime has a unique premise. The series follows Maomao, an apothecary who is kidnapped and forced to work as a servant in the Imperial Palace (seemingly based on Imperial China).

There, she gets the attention of a palace official named Jinshi when she manages to find a cure for one of the Emperor’s heirs who has fallen ill.

Soon, Maomao is enlisted to help with the various medical mysteries that plague the palace.

Thanks to its intriguing premise, The Apothecary Diaries has quickly become one of the highlight shows of the season. For instance, the series’ discussion threads are routinely in the top 5 on Reddit’s r/anime (via AnimeKarmaList).

Even though its popularity may not be at the level of shows like Jujutsu Kaisen and Frieren, it’s still undeniably a major hit. Not to mention that it’s an effective advertisement for the novels and manga.

As with most anime, this show is based on a light novel series of the same name, which also has a manga adaptation.

Before the anime aired, The Apothecary Diaries manga and light novels had a combined 24 million copies printed.

Just a month after the anime's premiere, the manga and light novels now have over 27 million copies printed, meaning the anime helped the series add an extra 3 million copies.

Given that the anime continues to be enjoyed by fans in Japan and overseas, it’s likely that the manga and novel circulation numbers will increase even more as the show continues.

New episodes of The Apothecary Diaries are streamed every week on Crunchyroll in the US and other select regions.
