Ant-Man and The Wasp Producer Talks MCU LGBTQ Representation

Marvel has been talking up representation in recent years, with Black Panther having a mostly African cast and Captain Marvel having the studio's first female solo lead. However, the one thing fans have been waiting for is proper LGBTQ representation in Marvel movies. There were instances when the company could have made a character a part of the LGBTQ but backed out, like with Valkyrie in Thor: Ragnarok, hence the frustration.

During an interview with Den of Geek, Ant-Man and The Wasp producer Stephen Broussard was asked about the studio's lack of LGBTQ characters. Broussard acknowledged how it must be frustrating for people in this community to constantly be told to "stay tuned" but he promises that representation is being worked on behind-the-scenes.

"For sure, you will see that. I know it can be frustrating if you're part of a group that wants to see more representation and the answer is always ‘stay tuned' - I can imagine that that's frustrating - but that is happening behind the scenes, you're going to be seeing that more and more. Representation across individual groups in the years ahead."

It's a shame that there are still no prominent LGBTQ MCU characters after 10 years of Marvel Studio movies. Fans were really hoping Valkyrie would be the first character to be a part of this group but any evidence of that was cut from the theatrical release.

Thankfully, Marvel does have some LGBTQ characters in their shows, like Carolina Dean in The Runaways. The comics also have their fair share of characters in this group like Northstar, America Chavez, Iceman, and so much more.

Avengers 4 is slated to hit theaters on May 3, 2019. It is expected to be the culmination of the current MCU.
