Marvel Studios is the home of blockbusters. Despite always performing well at the box office and being one of the biggest franchises in the world, it rarely gets recognition from major acting awards like the Oscars. Some fans and critics believe that superhero movies don’t possess the same excellent elements that other movies have. However, the narrative has changed as the MCU wins its first major award from the acting industry, thanks to Angela Bassett.
Regardless of the distinction between superhero movies and other films, no one can deny that every project is a way to celebrate everyone’s talent, from the filmmakers to the staff to the actors. During the 80th Golden Globe Awards, MCU fans witnessed a historic win as Bassett took home the 2023 Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress for her performance as Queen Ramonda in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, making her the first Marvel actor ever to win a Golden Globe for a movie based on Marvel Comics.
Bassett paid tribute to Chadwick Boseman during her acceptance speech. “We embarked on this journey together with love. We mourned, we loved, we healed. We were surrounded each and every day by the light and the spirit of Chadwick Boseman,” she said.
The award-winning actress continued, “We have joy in knowing that with this historic ‘Black Panther’ series, it is a part of his legacy that he helped to lead us. We showed the world what Black unity, leadership and love looks like, behind and in front of the camera. To the Marvel fans, thank you for embracing these characters and showing us so much love.”

This marks the second Golden Globe for Bassett after winning the award for Best Actress (Musical or Comedy) for 1993's What's Love Got to Do with It. She also won a SAG Award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in 2018's Black Panther. The 9-1-1 star has already proven and continues to set the standard that a woman like her can do it all, from drama to comedy to superhero genres.
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever concluded Marvel's Phase 4. It has been one of the most memorable MCU projects given the endearing performances not just from Bassett but also from Letitia Wright and Danai Gurira, among the other women in the film. It was also the installment that moved fans to tears given the tribute elements to Boseman, who was one of the pillars of the film series when he led the original Black Panther film as King T'Challa before he died on August 28, 2020, due to colon cancer.
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever will begin streaming on Disney+ on February 1.
