Angela Bassett Loses Steam at the Oscar Race Following SAG Awards Loss

Last month, in the aftermath of her Golden Globe and Critics' Choice Award wins, Angela Bassett was considered the frontrunner to win Best Supporting Actress at the Academy Awards for her performance in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Her nomination is historical in the MCU history since she is the first ever actor to do so.

However, last week, the actress faced her first major loss this season as she lost the BAFTA Award to Kerry Condon from The Banshees of Inisherin and awards experts were noticing that her frontrunner status might be in danger after all as she won't be sweeping the awards leading to the Oscars.

Now, it looks like Bassett's Oscar chances have lost steam due to the last night's SAG Awards where she failed to win the Supporting Actress Award as Jamie Lee Curtis surprisingly won the category instead for her performance in Everything Everywhere All at Once.

The other nominees in that line-up were Condon, Hong Chau from The Whale, and Stephanie Hsu from Everything Everywhere All at Once. Prior to the night, Bassett was predicted to win by most experts and perhaps it would have been an indicator of her winning an Oscar in two weeks.

Curtis' surprise win was also a sign that Everything Everywhere All at Once is set to dominate the night which ended up happening as it also won Supporting Actor for Ke Huy Quan, Lead Actress for Michelle Yeoh, and the Cast Ensemble award, the top prize of the ceremony.

With Bassett's SAG Awards loss, it is an indication that she was a weak frontrunner and the Supporting Actress award is now a three-way race with Bassett, Condon, and now Curtis, who is also a beloved and respected actress in the industry just like the Black Panther: Wakanda Forever actress.

Since the voting period for the Oscars doesn't start until a couple of days, it is interesting to see where the race will go, and let's wait and see whether Bassett will be able to get over her obstacles and still "do the thing" at the end.
