The Hobbit film trilogy kind of ended with a fizzle back in 2014, but Lord of the Rings is set to come back in the form of a big-budget series on Amazon Prime Video. While production may have been halted due to COVID-19, word has it that the cameras have started rolling for the series once more.
Deadline reports that Amazon's Lord of the Rings has resumed production in New Zealand. According to the site, production for the first two episodes was almost done before the pandemic hit, but since NZ has had a good handle at the Coronavirus, work get once again resume on the series.
While J.R.R. Tolkien's books were pretty much covered by the films already, this series is aiming to tell its own original story which takes place during the Second Age of Middle-Earth—roughly a thousand years before the story of The Hobbit. Since the Second Age basically ends with Sauron losing the Ring to Isildur, this series is likely to build up to the "War of the Last Alliance" between men, elves, and orcs.
Admittedly, there is still a lot of material to draw from when it comes to Tolkien's The Silmarillion, but The Second Age has a lot of room for storytellers J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay to give us some original characters with their own quests and adventures. Hopefully, they manage to recapture the magic of Middle-Earth and bring LOTR to a new era of fans.
No release date has been set for The Lord of The Rings series on Amazon.
