It has been nearly two years since it was announced at MAPPA Stage 2021, and finally, the upcoming anime movie Alice to Therese no Maboroshi Kojo has an official release date.
The film’s upcoming release was announced at the MAPPA Stage 2023 event which happened yesterday, May 21.
There, a new trailer for the film was released, revealing its September release in Japan.
This film is significant for being MAPPA’s first original anime movie. Not to mention that it’s helmed by the esteemed Japanese director and screenwriter Mari Okada.
MAPPA Finally Breaks Silence on Alice to Therese no Maboroshi Kojo
Back in June 2021, Alice to Therese no Maboroshi Kojo (or Alice and Therese's Illusory Factory in English) was revealed at the MAPPA Stage 2021 event with a new trailer.
The film got a lot of attention, but since the first trailer’s reveal, MAPPA has been radio silent on it. Though finally, the latest MAPPA Stage event brought a new update.
At yesterday’s event, a new trailer for the anime was released, revealing its September 15 premiere date. You can watch the new trailer here:
Aside from featuring impressive animation based on the trailer, this upcoming movie is highly anticipated by fans as it is directed by Mari Okada, the writer of the tearjerker anime Anohana.
While it’s true that Okada is best known for writing Anohana, she has also worked on lots of popular titles over the years. These include Toradora!, Black Butler, A Whisker Away, and many more.

Alice to Therese no Maboroshi Kojo Release Date
Okada is typically the series composer for many works that she’s involved in, but Alice to Therese is different as she not only writes the film, but she is also the director.
As for its story, the film follows Masamune, a middle school student who lives in a town where a steelworks factory has sealed the town off from the outside world. There, the townspeople live unchanging daily lives.
Soon though, Masamune and his classmate, Atsumi, come across a mysterious girl named Itsumi. This chance encounter threatens to upend their daily life.
Ahead of the film’s release, it was also announced that Mari Okada will release a novelization of the movie, which will be released on June 13.
Alice to Therese no Maboroshi Kojo will be released in Japan on September 15, 2023. For now, there’s no word yet on international release plans.
