While they share the same creator, Oshi no Ko and Love Is War couldn’t be further apart story-wise. But in a recent interview, creator Aka Akasaka revealed how the live-action Kaguya-sama movie inspired Oshi no Ko.

Akasaka was interviewed by Anime News Network recently, and there, he shared how he came up with the idea for his new manga, which has become a massive hit thanks in large part to the ongoing anime adaptation.

When asked about how the idea for Oshi no Ko's premise came to be, Akasaka shared an interesting story about how one of his assistants said that they wanted to be reincarnated as an idol’s child.

Akasaka explained that this is a famous joke in Japan that’s often mentioned whenever an idol announces their marriage.

He said that when he heard his assistant joke about this, he noted down the idea, and from there, the series’ premise was formed.

Unlike his previous work which he wrote and illustrated, Akasaka is only the writer for Oshi no Ko as he tapped manga artist Mengo Yokoyari to work on the illustrations.

Akasaka decided to contact Yokoyari after reading one of her works so that she can be the one to illustrate it.

But aside from working on the art, Akasaka shared that Yokoyari also helps out in the story.

Akasaka revealed that he consults with Yokoyari and his editor whenever he feels stuck in the story.

Live-action anime adaptations get a bad rap from fans, and this was even a plot point in the Oshi no Ko anime’s third episode.

This led many to believe that this was inspired by the live-action Love Is War film.

Interestingly, Akasaka did not criticize the live-action film. Though he did mention how it was an inspiration for the series.

During the interview, Akasaka mentioned that he started to hear more complaints about the entertainment industry following the live-action Kaguya-sama movie’s production.

This fact, coupled with grumblings he heard from his streamer friends helped Akasaka form the story of Oshi no Ko and how it tackles the Japanese entertainment industry.

The Oshi no Ko anime streams every week on HIDIVE in the US. Meanwhile, the manga is also released weekly on Manga Plus internationally.
