A Sign of Affection is one of this season’s most intriguing romance shows thanks to its interesting premise. Following the anime’s premiere, A Sign of Affection VA Yu Miyazaki revealed in an interview how he pulled off the first episode’s foreign language scene.

Language is a big aspect of this series as its main character, Yuki Itose, is a hearing-impaired girl who soon meets Itsuomi Nagi, a multilingual schoolmate.

There are many anime characters fluent in two languages, but Nagi has them beat as he’s fluent in Japanese, English, and German. That’s not even mentioning how he can speak some Chinese and is learning Spanish.

Voicing Itsuomi in A Sign of Affection is Yu Miyazaki, an anime VA who is best known for being the voice of Sachiro Hirugami in Haikyuu!! and Daigo Sase in Tsurune.

Some anime fans may also be familiar with him as the husband of Atsumi Tanezaki, another popular VA who is known as the voice of Frieren in Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End and Anya in Spy x Family.

In an interview with Animate Times, Miyazaki recounted how he was able to land the role of Itsuomi. During the audition, the production staff was looking for a VA who was fluent in Japanese and English.

What’s more, the voice actor must also have enough time on his schedule for German language lessons.

Luckily, Miyazaki fits the bill as he can speak English and meets the other requirements. Despite Miyazaki saying that the audition didn’t go perfectly for him, he managed to land the role.

Animate Times’ interview was with Miyazaki and Sumire Morohoshi, the voice actress of Yuki (also Emma in The Promised Neverland). There, they were asked about the first episode’s foreign language scene.

Morohoshi revealed that the foreign language scenes were recorded separately, though there were times that she saw her co-star meet with his German language teacher to deliver German lines.

Miyazaki confirmed this, saying that some scenes were indeed recorded separately. He then went on to explain how difficult those were, especially those in German, given the language’s difficulty.

Still, Miyazaki was thankful that he could learn a new language, especially as it was not something he’d pay out-of-pocket for.

A Sign of Affection will continue with Episode 2, which will be released this weekend on Crunchyroll.
