The Yellowstone universe is undergoing a major overhaul as it prepares to bid farewell to the original series with its upcoming fifth season. Meanwhile, the prequel spinoff 1923 is set to conclude with Season 2, leaving many fans wondering what's next for the franchise.
The limited series 1923 follows the story of Jacob and Cara Dutton, played by Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren, respectively, as they fight to protect their ranch from opportunistic ranchers and businessmen. Originally intended to be a two-season show, fans were unsure whether the show would be extended or rebooted.
The End of 1923
However, Brandon Sklenar, who plays Spencer Dutton, confirmed in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter that 1923 will definitely end with Season 2 and that the show is "limited" with no future seasons planned.
The Yellowstone franchise, created by Taylor Sheridan, is still expanding despite the conclusion of the original series. Sheridan has multiple projects in the works, including a prequel spinoff titled 1883 and a present-day spinoff called 6666.
The former will star David Oyelowo as legendary peace officer Bass Reeves, while the latter will focus on the criminal-turned-ranch hand Jimmy Hurdstrom, played by Jefferson White.
Kevin Costner's Exit from Yellowstone
However, the franchise recently faced turmoil when Kevin Costner, who plays the lead role in the original series, announced that he would be leaving the show to pursue his own passion project, Horizon. This delay in production resulted in Paramount confirming that Yellowstone will end with its fifth season.
Despite this setback, the studio has confirmed that a sequel series with Academy Award winner Matthew McConaughey is in the works. No further details have been released regarding the cast or story.

The Future of Yellowstone
With Sheridan busy planning the future of the Yellowstone franchise and the Writers Guild of America's strike impacting production, it may be some time before fans see any new projects.
