Malik, now known as Zayn, started as a contestant in the reality TV series The X Factor in 2010. From there, he became a member of One Direction, which later became one of the best-selling boy bands of all time.

However, despite the group's huge success, he left to go solo in 2015 and signed a solo recording contract with RCA Records.

He opted for a more alternative R&B music style on his debut solo album, Mind of Mine, with the single “Pillowtalk.” This helped him to become the first British male artist to top the U.K. and U.S. music charts.

He earned an American Music Award and an MTV Video Music Award as a successful musical artist.

He, too, is the only artist who has won the Billboard Music Award for New Artists of the Year twice, as a One Direction member in 2017 and as a solo artist in 2017.

Zayn Malik Calls for a Free School Meal for Kids

Meanwhile, Malik wrote an open letter to the U.K. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak to “give all children living in poverty a free school meal.”

"These children are suffering from lack of concentration, some even resorting to stealing food from school canteens because they are so hungry but can't afford to buy lunch,” he wrote.

“They are also feeling shame which is directly impacting their physical and mental health,” he continued. “I know what that shame feels like, I have seen it first-hand, as growing up in Bradford, I relied on free school meals."

Malik supports the Food Foundation campaign and calls for all children in households on Universal Credit to have free school meals. The charity estimates about 800,000 kids live in England in poverty, but they’re not all qualified for free school meals.
